In Chapter 4 of this real-life love story, everything changes. A workplace crush, silent signals, jealousy, and one shocking revelation lead to heartbreak on her last day. A bittersweet chapter of love, loss, and realization.

After lunch, we headed to the Dome inside our campus—a favorite spot where everyone hung out.

The Dome was a semi-circle structure made of glass, surrounded by a water tank filled with large, colorful fish. To this day, I remember it as a surreal place—almost like sitting in the middle of an ocean while still at work. A place where angels in bright dresses laughed, and the sound of water mixed with the echoes of friendship.

That day was no different. We were teasing each other, pulling legs, and having fun when I got a call from an old friend. It had been ages since we spoke, so the conversation went on for nearly two hours.

And, as human psychology goes, the longer the call, the higher the assumption: “Must be his girlfriend.”

She thought so too.

I could see it in her eyes—the slight anxiety, the restlessness, the curiosity. I could almost hear her whispering to her friend: “He has a girlfriend.”

It was funny. But more than that, it was cute. For once, she looked jealous—over a phone call.

For almost a month, things flowed with the usual rhythm—our “chess games,” stolen glances, and those silent conversations our eyes always seemed to have.

Until Friday, November 18th, 2011.

The Jealousy I Misread

That day, something shifted.

Normally, she had tea with her group of female friends, even though a few boys were part of their circle. But this time, she stood with a boy, talking.

And yes, jealousy struck me. Hard.

Somewhere in my head, I convinced myself she was only doing it to make me jealous. But I was terribly wrong.

Because in reality, she was trying to tell me something.

She kept glancing at me, waiting for me to look back. But blinded by jealousy, I refused. And then, she left the pantry.

I didn’t see what she wanted to show me. I didn’t hear what she wanted to say.

The Shotgun News

That evening, I had plans with my colleagues to watch The Adventures of Tintin. At around 6:30, as we prepared to leave, one of our miserly friends (nicknamed MukkiChooooooos, meaning miser) started complaining that the movie tickets were too expensive.

I snapped. In anger, I blurted out:
“If you guys aren’t coming, I’ll take her and go with her instead.”

Almost instantly, another friend teased back:
“Fine, bring her along and we’ll pay for your movie tickets too.”

That’s when it hit me—Rahul and I weren’t the only ones who liked her. Others had noticed her too.

But what came next felt like a shotgun to the chest.

One of my friends, casually and carelessly, said the words that shattered me:

“It’s her last day at the office. She’s leaving.”

I froze. My body went numb. It felt like 1,000 volts of electricity had shot through me. My mind refused to process it.

As I stood there, I overheard her friends hugging her, wishing her “Best of luck.”

And just like that… she was gone.

The Realization

In that moment, I realized something painful: I had been protective and caring toward a girl I barely even knew. We hadn’t talked much. We hadn’t spent months together. Just a few weeks, really.

I didn’t even know if she was truly attracted to me, or if I was just another score in her “beauty game.”

Had I only imagined the silent signals she gave me?
Or had she truly wanted me to know something more?

All I knew was this: she was leaving, and I couldn’t stop her.

I stood there helpless, watching her walk away.

Later that night, I went to the movie with my friends. The film was good, but I hardly registered a single scene. My heart was too heavy. My laughter, forced. My thoughts, lost.

That night, I realized what karma really felt like.
